Today two groups are going to go out and do some filming while the rest of us work on vocabulary. We’ll switch that up on Monday and then by Tuesday we should be doing some basic editing. We’ll be using Quia.com to do some of the vocab but if not, we’ll just take notes. Quia will be where we have the quiz later, now that all of you are logged into it. :)

If you have not thought about what kind of project you wanted to do, you need to get that finalized so that in two weeks you can get started on it.

Here is the vocabulary  PowerPoint. And here it is as a pdf document. More will be added to it later.

We’ll be in the other computer lab today, room C5, to log in, make sure you have access to the server space from here and also to log in to Quia.com. Quia is the website that I use to take online quizzes, study your vocabulary, etc. Fun, right? :) See the link to the right for my Quia page. Or click here.

I’ll have a sign on the door in A7 to send you guys over to C5.

Storyboard Practice- Multimedia Day 6 January 29, 2008

Today you will see another video, called “Breaking the Rules” from Izzy Video.   After viewing that, we’ll head out into the hallway to try out the filming of someone’s storyboard as well as my own storyboard for yesterday’s assignment.  Or we may just film mine.

When we return back into the room, we’ll start some editing together to see how we might put all of these things together into a short video.

A reminder, when you do a storyboard, be as specific as possible so that if you hand the paper to someone else, they know what you are talking about and can film from that storyboard easily.

Today we talk about storyboarding.  This is how you will organize your thoughts and put them on paper so that when you get a video camera in your hand, you don’t waste time and you do what you planned to do.  Here is a storyboard for you to use.  Storyboard

To practice storyboarding today, you will create your own video on paper.  Choose a simple act, such as a person walking up to and opening a door to a room, a car, a refrigerator, or something else.  Everyone will do their own story board to practice.  I will have copies for you.  The link above is for you to get copies for yourself later.

We’ll start talking about basic video principles today. This website/presentation will be what we use to begin the discussion and notes. You will need to take notes on what you learn and what we discuss while watching the video.

Another great site to get the same information is Atomic Learning. Try this page, their Storytelling instructional page. It has examples of the different shots, etc.

You might also find the same information here, at the Butte College video website.

Don’t forget that we will have a guest speaker on Friday to show us more on how to set up a shot, some lighting information and also ideas on what type of video you might want to do for the SEVA contest.

Today in class: I’m checking the 3 ideas you had for your homework last night, to come up with video project ideas that YOU want to do.  And I’m collecting signed syllabi (sp?) from you for credit in class.

We’ll put together the binders for the class and look them over. Then head on over to A7, the Digital Photo computer lab with the Apple computers. You will be assigned a single computer to use, sign off on another release form, etc.

Also, you need to try to purchase some headphones for you to use in class when editing your projects or listening to podcasts. We don’t have enough money to buy them and you probably would rather not share them with others anyway.

Lastly, we’ll see how to set up the camera, tripod, etc., if we have time.

Tomorrow we jump into the basics of video production.

Welcome to the first day of the Old/New and improved Multimedia class. We meet 3rd period in D7 for now and then will move over to the Apple lab in the A wing later this week to get started.

Some things that you need to be aware of:

  1. The syllabus needs to be signed and returned to me, Mr. Dunn, by tomorrow for full credit. That includes the waiver on the back so that we can use your image/face and/or comments in video’s that we put on the web. If your parents do not want your image/face and/or comments on the web or seen publicly, they can still opt out but they need to sign the form so that I know what they want to do.
  2. Notebooks and binders: I’ll give you a notebook and you will help me to put together the binders that we’ll be using in the class to create our own custom text book.
  3. SEVA competition: We have the use of a new camera, tripod and microphone courtesy of Channel 10, SECCTV and SEVA, all groups that are promoting use of video in the classroom and for education. BUT…we have to submit two (2) video’s to the competition by March 7th or they take back the equipment. So be ready to get moving quickly and learn how to create quality video productions.
  4. Be trustworthy. This class will not work if I cannot trust you with the expensive equipment and to be able to wander the campus to create your products. We’ll talk more about that today, it’s very important.

Get ready kids, tomorrow begins the new course at EGHS (ok, old but we haven’t offered it for a few years).

Don’t forget, you’ll be expected to submit a video by March 7 to the SEVA awards, done through the BESTNet organization.

The next post will tell you what we’re doing this week and get you ready for the class.  See you later.
